1 – Check the temperature differences in US cities? On average across all 60 cities, urban summer temperatures were 2.4 degree F hotter than rural temperatures. 2. Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area? I live in Hurghada, Red Sea, Egypt, we have the desert climate clear in most of the year months with degrees in the summer reaches to 45 degrees in July with a high level of humidity, and these high temperatures degrees lead to enormous use of air-conditioning systems in buildings, cars…etc which increase the heart related illness that kill many people annually. ![Hurghada City][1] ![Hurghada rural Surrounding][2] 3. Which are the measures you would propose? If I was involved in the decision making process of an initiative related to the UHI effect I would propose: 1 – I would plant vast spaces with plants to increase the green area in the city to enable better heat exchange and reduce the temperature degrees which decrease the UHI effects. 2 – I would use natural and innovative methods in the urban and architectural designs to reduce the enormous use of air-conditioning systems which have its positive impact to UHI effects. 3 – I would focus on the people awareness to the ecosystem and our responsibilities towards the environment. 4 - I would increase the bicycles lanes in all the roads to reduce the impact of cars and buses. 4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area? The government in Hurghada has some policies to reduce the UHI effect but they are not taking the problem seriously as a first priority as they have significant steps to be clear in visible results, but I will mention some of these policies: 1 – They are increasing the green areas not as faster as necessary. 2 – They are studying laws to the building colors suggesting white colors to reduce the UHI effects.
