Question 2. Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area Minneapolis is 4.3 degrees hotter than rural areas in the summer. This effects plant life in the city - requiring more irrigation which increases water demand. Because there are less impervious surfaces water run off is an issue, polluting the lakes and increasing algal blooms. Air pollution is increased on hotter summer days, and there is an increased electricity demand for air conditioning. ![St.Paul, Minnesota][1] ![Pizza Farm, Stockholm, Wisconsin][2] The two images are of downtown St. Paul and a farm in nearby Wisconsin. The amount of dark, hard surfaces in downtown clearly contributes to the increased UHI. Question 3. Which are the measures you would propose? Increasing pervious surfaces, moving parking below grade and providing more park space in downtown. Question 4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area? Minneapolis is always concerned about park maintenance. Living in a northern climate it is difficult to determine weather white or black roofs are more appropriate, since in the colder months heat absorption is desired.
