In our country, with regards to the city I chose to compare the heat island effect and its surrounding rural areas, I think the difference between the two places is not that warmer compared to the temperature differences in US cities. It is surprisingly hotter in cities than it is in their nearby rural areas. Since we are in a tropical country, the temperature difference in urban and rural area is not that significant as I have checked the temperature difference in the *Climate Central*. **2. Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area?** From where I work, which is at Makati City, the summer heat would be up to 10 degrees hotter compared with the rural areas nearby the city. From where I live, the heat temperature is not that incomparable; the difference with Makati City would only be 1 degree. But on the average, the difference would be 2.75 degrees with the surrounding cities. ![http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1180/1429759773_36a2e50ea5_o.jpg][1] *Makati City* ![Nuvali; Surrounding cities][2] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14620635124599222.jpg [2]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1462064160221423.jpg *Nuvali; recreational area outside the metro* **3. Which are the measures you would propose?** Measures I would propose that would fit and probably be beneficial to many would be re-designing the transportation. That would mean better transportation system so that people would less opt to use private vehicles. One of the major contributors to heat in the urban areas is the CO2 emissions from public and private vehicles; these as well conduce to the heavy traffic which further develops the heat gain within the city. Another proposal I would have for our cities would be to have more open space on the upcoming cities; although for those already existing, I would propose for them to install green walls or green roofing and have albedo or reflective surfaces so that we could lessen the heat. As for the roads, I think islands that have vegetation is also ideal if we couldn't lessen the heat gain; it is also good for a tropical country like ours since it will provide shade and cooler wind. **4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area?** Since the government do not much have regulations with regards to this phenomenon, I do not think it concerns policy making in our area. Although planners think that we should have, we do not. There were reminders and warnings sent to public to take notice of regarding of the tremendous heat we might experience. Some local governments though, initiate tree planting within their area, but has lack of preservation and regulation. There were also projects done to lessen pollution in the metro, which are still insufficient since we still experience the UHI.
