We can see that the urban areas are usually covered with hard and dark paving materials with little vegetation. Rural ![Rural][1] Urban ![Urban][2] I would propose to change the material used for paving. Instead of asphalt, which is dark and good radiation absorber, we can use more ‘natural’ material, such as compacted sand. We can also increase the numbers of trees to provide more shading. We can have green wall or green roof to improve the insulation and reduce heat gain by radiation. The use of impervious surface increases the water content in the paving and therefore its heat capacity. Its temperature will fluctuate less than its environment. In Hong Kong, we have the policy to increase greening in urban areas. We can see increasing number of green roofs and green walls in both public and private development.
