The configuration of the city of Joinville shows a large urbanized area, but with considerable green areas in the inserts near the center. This is a hallmark of the city, which still maintains green areas such as pastures in the urban area. The city, in prominence as an industrial pole of the State of Santa Catarina, attracted, mainly from the 60's, a considerable population. The city has a total of 235,612 inhabitants in 1980 and in 2006 this total was 487,045 inhabitants. So, in 26 years almost doubled the population. This can be explained by the installation of several industries in the region mainly starting from the 60s. As for the altitude difference in the city, it is important to note that the city of Joinville is located at the bottom of the Babitonga Bay with altitude for the closest part to sea level. But the region also presents altitudes that reach 1.538m. This is configured as a natural barrier to the ocean circulation and humidity, influencing the rainfall in the region and also being a physical limitation to the horizontal expansion of the city. ![Altitude differences. 5th of july, 2000.][1] Due to its geographical location, the state of Santa Catarina is prone to the influence of various types of atmospheric circulation, featuring the region by presented better distribution of annual rainfall. Among the atmospheric systems can highlight the cold fronts, the cyclonic vortices, the dug to average levels, the tropical convection, the South Atlantic Convergence Zone and ocean circulation. As for the temperature variation, the average is around 20 °. ![temperatures average][2] A factor responsible for the high temperatures in Joinville region is the location of the city at the bottom of a bay and between two mountain formations, one to the west and another to the north-northeast. There are heat islands located mainly in the Tupy Foundry industrial district region, located to the southeast of the Boa Vista Hill. In this region was recorded temperature values of up to 32 ° C in 2002 and close to 30 ° C in 2005. Other areas with high temperature differences are also found around industries. ![Tupy Foundry industrial district region][3] ![Tupy Foundry industrial district region and Boa Vista Hill map][4] High temperatures, as recorded in the Tupy district, were also observed in parts of the Pirabeiraba industrial district. This region is also characterized by the allocation of several companies and large heat emission by its production processes. ![Joinville and Pirabeiraba map][5] Tupy Foundry has as main process the steel and cast iron processing, a process that releases a lot of energy as heat. In addition, the industry is located in Boa Vista neighborhood, the most populous of the city, further contributing to the anthropogenic energy produced in the region. This could also be seen in the heat islands diagnosed in the industrial region of Pirabeiraba. The occurrence of the hottest areas is again associated to foundry productive processes. Heat islands found on north of the city are caused by processes similar to the Tupy Foundry, but on a smaller productive scale. In another highlighted area in the city center is located Husky company, which operates in the textile field. This company has boilers and a chimney for the emission of gases from the production process. **3. Which are the measures you would propose?** I would propose the withdrawal of industries that are located in the most central areas of the city, concentrating them in the industrial area, let the public spaces more wooded and comfortable to the pedestrians and users of this spaces, and create microclimates that could let the high temperature mildest. **4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area?** I could not find anything about UHI policies in my city.
