(4.7°F) - Kansas City (4.6°F) - Columbus (4.4°F) - Minneapolis (4.3°F) - Seattle (4.1°F) The most common criteria measured in the study are: - Highest difference between city and nerby rural area. - Average difference in summer temperature between city and nearby rural area. - More days above 90° F each year, than rural areas 2- Unfortunately the effects of the UHI in my city (Bogotá, Colombia) have not been measured rigorously in the past, but is been measured in the present to provide information for the future due to the increase of concern in the area. ![][1] This is a satellite image of Bogotá that allow us to understand how the city contributes to the UHI effects. Bogotá has grown rapidly in the last century changing completely the material surface for concrete and asphalt, also its growing has caused a process of densification of population and buildings, and the expansion leads to an increase in automobile usage. Those are the main factors that cause the UHI effects, that we are certainly living nowadays. The average temperature of the city has increase this year leading to new behaviors never seen before in Bogotá, going form the little one such as using shorts and sandals, to the big ones as having air conditioners in this city that was one of the coldest in the country. ![][2] This one shows Chia which is the surrounding rural area in the north of Bogotá. Of course the amount of vegetation and the low density, generate less UHI effects than Bogotá. Unfortunately this rural area has been growing to become a suburb in the last years, generating a greater amount of UHI effects. 3- - Not motorized transportation such as biking and walking. - Sustainable architecture designs, reducing the energy usage of buildings. - Densification and urbanization measures. - Greenery 4- Im not aware of any policy. As i said before, in my country the global warning was not in the agenda of the administration before. The awareness of global warning and its global and local effects, has started to grow just in the last years with few results and policies until now.
