----------------------------- - Dallas: up to 19.0F, average 3.8F - Denver: up to 23.0F, average 4.9F, 3rd biggest difference - Seattle: up to 17.0F, average 4.1F, 10th biggest difference Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area? ----------------------------- It's lucky that my university does have a master thesis evaluating UHI effects in Macau, whose data were evaluated in January 2005. It pointed out that, in general, high tempture areas as downtown were in average 2.5 degree Celcius higher than surrounding rural areas. ![Taipa Downtown area][1] ![Rural area (University)][2] Macau is well-known for its density of both population and buildings. Thus, in city area (Macau Peninsula and Taipa Downtown), most roads are narrow like downtown Hong Kong. However, since university lies in rural area, it has larger distance between buildings as well as wider roads. Due to climate reasons, comparing to university's wider roads and more green coverage, Taipa Downtown (Fig. 1) will suffer a significant UHI effect than the university (Fig. 2). Which are the measures you would propose? ----------------------------- While it's almost impossible to alter the density of population and buildings, workarounds like tree planting, using high-reflective materials for buildings can be effective on reducing UHI effects. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area? ----------------------------- While few policies on UHI effect can be seen, scholars had advocated ways to reduce UHI effects in Macau. They advised that government should increase green coverage in city area and educate people to save energy.
