Aguascalientes city is part of a developing country that has the potential of being a developed country; Mexico. As a part of it Aguascalientes has grown at a high speed, devastating the natural surrounding areas as the time passes by. Industrial automobile industries are part of the main economic growth, but at the same time this economic activity is generating more vehicles, pollution, highways, less natural and public spaces. Aguascalientes also has a boom in the housing development. A lot of companies are speculating with the land and its usage, buying countless square meters of land every year and building poor quality housing developments. This boom (a copy of the suburban movement in the USA which we already know is not a sustainable urban development in this contemporary times) has a negative impact in the city because of the excessive use of land, materials, bad architectural design (low budget investment) combined with the ghastly mobility and transportation, the use of automobiles increases. The UHI is a current problem in the city. Generally speaking climate heating is more intensive than ever, the climate changes drastically even in one day, cooler mornings, hotter afternoons, always different each year (probably because of climate change). The “downtown” or the most urbanized area is definitely hotter than the rural areas, probably because of the lack on public spaces, green areas, and sustainable strategies for urbanizing, building, recycling etc. ![AGUASCALIENTES CITY URBAN VS RURAL][1] ![URBAN AREA][2] ![RURAL AREA][3] 3 Which are the measures you would propose? First I would improve the law by adding new sustainable criteria, for buildings, industries, and urban areas. Then I would start with the re-densification (with sustainable efficient projects) of the city in order to stop the sprawl effect. Recover public and green spaces, enhance the public transportation and mobility strategies allowing new transportation methods, and promote a control and optimization of the city’s energy renewables and storage. 4 Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area? There is no interest at the moment concerning UHI effect. The government is self-centered on industry and infrastructure related with automobiles.
