![Temperature in Lonavla][2] Answer 1: These two images give the temperature data for the city I live in Thane and Lonavla; a hill station which is 67 kilometers away by crow's flight. Being a hill station definitely helps with lower temperatures. As of today the temperature difference as we can see is 4°C. Answer 2: ![Image showing the area I live in Thane City][3] This area is pretty green and is a bit away from the city center so there is a definite temperature difference between the two of at least 2°C to 3°C. A proper mapping of the microclimatic data here is not done. This residential complex has replaced what would have been forest land. At the time of construction which started around the mid 1980's it was compulsory to plant trees along the roads within the complex. This is one of the reasons that has enabled this area to remain cooler than the rest of the city. Following is the image of Lake Pawna in Lonavla. Over the years this place has gotten crowded as well. But there are no high rises here. The district centre has shops and hotels built close to each other but the rest of the district consists of bungalows, resorts, lakes and plenty of trees. ![Lake Pawna as seen from Tungi which is 24 kms from Lonavla City Centre][4] When one compares these images it's clear that anthropogenic contribution to the heat is much higher in cities than the rural areas. Cities are more dense and hence more hot. Answer 3: Thane city is blessed with many lakes. Conserving the lakes would go a long way in lowering the overall temperature of the city. The city is also bounded by a creek on one side. The creek and mangroves need to be restored to their original volume. These literally are the lungs of the city. Planting trees which have a wide and dense foliage at least on internal roads in the city should be made compulsory and maintenance of these trees should be given prime importance. Guideline should be laid down for the amount of area that needs to be kept free at the base to ensure that the tree will grow properly. A lot of trees are being planted in the city even today by government and private organisations but they lack in maintenance. Answer 4: As far as my knowledge goes there are no policies to counter UHI in my area.
