The UHI Effect is present in almost all cities in the US. A University of Georgia study identifies Salt Lake City, Miami and Louisville as the top three urban heat island cities in the U.S. Also Denver has a high average summer temperature difference (2.6 degrees Celsius) between urban and nearby rural areas in the USA (A difference of 12.8 degrees Celsius has been recorded.) **2. Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area?** According to study, Indian government-backed research shows that Pune (one of the upcoming smart cities in India), is becoming an "urban heat island", with significantly different climates to their surrounding rural areas. Preliminary findings from the Research Institutes show that temperatures in Pune have risen 2C-3C in only 15 years. The ongoing study, based on Nasa satellite readings, also shows the city to be 5C-7C warmer than in the surrounding rural areas on summer nights. **3. Which are the measures you would propose?** The best way to make city liveable is to contain sprawl and increase the amount of vegetation. "Building water-retentive pavements and installing reflective roofs can be adopted to combat surface heat. Above all, the need of the hour is to control urban sprawl and put in place stringent policies for sustainable urbanisation **4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area?** There is no such policy as such as of now in our city. But in a broader perspective efforts are being made to implement such a policy in the near future.
