Below are pictures taken for the urban part/city center and rural part of Ankara. The first pictures is from the city center and the others are from the rural area. My work place is in the city center and my house is n the rural part near to Ankara. Even these areas are close to each other, both in winter and summer the temperature difference is about 4-6 Celsius degrees which results with a big difference in comfort and UHI. Air condtioning and heating of premises/houses is directly affected from this temperature difference. Urban Area ![enter image description here][1] ![enter image description here][2] Rural Area ![enter image description here][3] ![enter image description here][4] ![enter image description here][5] There are various measures that could be taken in order to reduce the UHI affect. First of all, a holistic city planning approach shoud be agreed on and implemented as it is appoved. Any changes conducted in a later stage will increase the UHI affect. Mass transportation should be promoted in order to lower the GHG emissions. Green recreational areas and park areas should be increased and the city’s layout should be implemented as a horizontal settlement. Unfortunately, there is not any policy considered to reduce the UHI effect while there is clear evidence. Probably, people are not aware of this problem and public awareness should be raised via different communication medi as a first step.
