I live in Cults, Aberdeen - this is considered one of the busiest arias of Aberdeen yet it mainly consists of Houses (a.k.a no business). Cults comprises of many semidetached 1.5 story houses that are widely spaced apart in an orderly fashion. The city centre is made up of tall Gothic buildings that are at least 4 stories high, and are almost always attached - meaning that the city centre has many long narrow allies with no "escapes", except for the few large spaces of road. - Sorry for poor image quality, I lack the funds for a camera. **City Centre** [Dropbox link, use if image does not show][1] ![city centre][2] **Suburbs (Where I live)** [Dropbox link, use if image does not show][3] ![city suburbs][4] As you can see, the city centre is much more crowded, it has a darker concrete and is mostly granite - while the suburbs are brick, much of the roofing is done with a red tint and the walls are often white. This means that the suburbs will deflect light to a greater degree than the city centre. The pictures also indicate that the surface area and layout of the two areas are vastly different, but in a way which increases the difference in heat. i.e. the city centre will often be warmer due to these factors. Unfortunately exact data on the temperatures could not be obtained, however I went out and did a field test with a thermometer (a thermometer on my phone) and it showed the city centre had an average temperature of 16C, while the suburbs had an average of 13C - huge difference. I only measured the temperature in 6 different areas of the city centre then another 6 in the suburbs. **Changes that could be imposed** This is somewhat tricky in this situation: Aberdeen is very cold most of the time, and most people I am sure welcome any extra heat from the UHI Effect. However, if I did need to reduce the temperature, I would have the roads and surfaces of buildings painted in a light colour (white etc.) **Policy making in Aberdeen** The UHI effect does not (to the best of my knowledge) have any effect on the decision making process in any way anywhere in Aberdeen. Because of the cold this far north the UHI effect is not noticeable, and due to the lack of graphs found on the subject I am drawn to conclude no one has any interest in the UHI effect in Aberdeen.
