The difference between the temperature in the city and that of the surrounding rural areas is high with cities like Los Angeles having a difference of up to 27 degrees. This shows that UHI has great impact on the cities temperature. **2. Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area?** In my place of residence the highest temperatures is normally 26 °C while the surrounding rural areas normally average around 17 °C.This means the temperature of Nairobi is 9°C higher than the surrounding areas. Some of the effects of UHI in Nairobi include, lack of vegetation ,High rise buildings with glasses resulting in more heat being reflected to the urban contours, emissions from vehicles and industries leading to global warming. ![Nairobi CBD][1] ![Limuru -Nairobi's hinterland ][2] The first Image is of Nairobi CBD and it shows an environment full of high rise buildings ,tarmac and concrete ,lack of trees resulting in UHI. The second image is of Limuru an area outside Nairobi ,the area has limited UHI due to high vegetation cover and lack of tarmac or concrete. **3. Which are the measures you would propose?** Among the measures I would propose includes creating more urban parks in the city ,planting trees and other vegetation to help with the cooling effect, promoting construction of buildings using vernacular architecture where buildings adapt to the areas climate ,reducing overeliance on motor vehicles for transport and developing walking and cycling infrastructure to reduce global warming effect from cars. **4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area?** There lacks a clear cut policy focusing on UHI, but the city administration is undertaking some initiatives aimed at greening the city through planting of grass and other vegetation in brownfields around the city and along transport routes.
