Urban Area - Heavy use of tarmac, block paving and other hardstanding materials for external surfaces as well as masonry, concrete as building materials. - Buildings in close proximity to one another. - Not much wide/open space apart from roads which retain heat from the sun. - Not much in the way of natural vegetation apart from small pockets. Rural Area - The rural areas are more open meaning heat is not trapped. - Less buildings means less wind blocking. The wind can cool these areas whereas in the city wind is disrupted by buildings etc. - Less hardstanding areas meaning heat is not retained in this way. - Buildings venting warm exhaust air from ventilation systems. - Buildings retaining and radiating heat through thermal mass due to materials used in construction. - External lighting creating heat. Which are the measures you would propose? - Amend local planning policy so that more emphasis is given to landscaping and vegetation within residential developments. - Amend local planning policy to encourage more spacious developments which are not so closely packed together. - Reduced hardstanding areas. Less reliance on hardstanding for parking, etc. - The use of more reflectant materials on buildings and/or hardstanding areas - The use of brise soleil on buildings to negate the solar radiation into buildings. ![Image01][1] ![Image02][2] ![Image03][3] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14467233489620616.jpg [2]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14467233754009697.jpg [3]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1446723391652042.jpg
