RURAL ![enter image description here][2] URBAN Toronto has an incredible amount of towers downtown, as well as throughout the city. These significantly contribute to an increase in the urban heat effect felt downtown. I took the rural picture when going to visit my sister in North York, which is about a 40 minute subway ride from the downtown core. I measured the temperature downtown on my cellphone as 25 degree Celsius, and only 19 degrees Celsius in the northern part of the city as soon as I got off the subway. It was a clear sunny day. With Toronto growing at an incredible rate, and more condominiums being built here than in the top 4/5 cities in the US combined, the UHI will only continue to grow and it is definitely a problem people should be addressing. An increase in several urban spaces filled with greenery, as well as implementation of various studied and proven architectural science techniques will greatly help reduce the UHI affects. Toronto is the first City in North America to have a bylaw to require and govern the construction of green roofs on new development. It was adopted by Toronto City Council in May 2009, under the authority of Section 108 of the City of Toronto Act. The Bylaw applies to new building permit applications for residential, commercial and institutional development made after January 31, 2010 and will apply to new industrial development as of April 30, 2012. It's good to know that many see this is as an issue worth an ongoing debate!
