2.UHI of Portland, Oregon (closest major city to me) - Up to 19 degrees hotter that surrounding areas/ Avg 4.8 degrees hotter in summer/ No. 4 biggest difference between urban and rural areas ![enter image description here][1] Portland has little forest and relatively few trees in and surrounding the area. ![enter image description here][2] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14467505287044521.jpg [2]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14467505919318133.png The city of Eugene has shorter buildings, is more spread out, and has many trees surrounding and within the city shading the streets and buildings. 3. I would highly recommend more trees and green 'living roofs' to shade and cool the buildings and trees. They would lose their leaves during the winter, allowing for more sunlight to warm the city. 4. I don't see much on Portland about the heat island affect other than a reporting of a heat wave in 2006. I do feel that Portland would greatly benefit from more trees being planted to both shade the streets and buildings below while holding in the heat at night when it gets cooler.
