ALTERING THE CLIMATE AND MICROCLIMATE (IE, THE CLIMATE OF A LOCALIZED AREA) IS CALLED HEAT ISLAND EFFECT. THIS PHENOMENON IS GENERATED BY THE SURFACES FIREWORKS THAT MAKE THE STREETS, SIDEWALKS, BUILDINGS, ROOFS, ETC. AND MANIFESTED IN AN INCREASE IN TEMPERATURE COMPARED WITH SURROUNDING AREAS WITH GREATER VEGETATION COVER (BASED ON OKE, 1982). THE HEAT ISLAND PHENOMENON DEPENDS ON FACTORS SUCH AS LATITUDE, HEIGHT ABOVE SEA LEVEL SEA, TOPOGRAPHY, SIZE OF THE CITY (WIENERT & KUTTLER, 2005) AND STABILITY ATMOSPHERIC (TOMLINSON, ET AL., 2010). THIS EFFECT IS POTENTIATED IN TROPICAL COUNTRIES (Oke T. R., 1982). Figure 1 outlines the distribution of the effect of the heat island depending on the prevailing surface coverage. IN MEDELLIN THERE ARE SPECIFIC AREAS THAT ATTRACT ATTENTION SO IMMEDIATELY IN SUCH STUDIES OF UHI FOR EXAMPLE ESTADIO 21,8 TS PROMEDIO CERRO VOLADOR 23,8 TS PROMEDIO CERRO NUTIBARA 23,2 TS PROMEDIO PARQUE NORTE 23,2 TS PROMEDIO ZONA INDUSTRIAL ITAGUI 34,5 TS PROMEDIO BARRIO COLOMBIA 34,9 TS PROMEDIO **3 STRATEGIES TO REDUCE EFECT UHI IN MEDELLIN** • DESIGN AND BUILD GREEN ROOFS AND WALLS • INCREASE TREE PLANTING IN URBAN PLANNING, PUBLIC SPACE AND INSIDE THE BUILDINGS • PROMOTE THE USE OF MATERIALS THAT ARE VULNERABLE LITTLE HEAT TO ENSURE THAT THE FLOORS ARE COLDER. **4. IS UHI EFFECT CONCERNING POLICY MAKING IN YOUR AREA?** MEDELLIN PUBLIC POLICY ORIENTED TERRITORIAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE CONTEXT OF SUSTAINABILITY, BY MAINTAINING AND ENHANCING THEIR NATURAL CAPITAL, RESPONSIBLE USE OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND THE ADOPTION OF A MODEL OF TERRITORIAL OCCUPATION IN HARMONY WITH THE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE REGION.
