Being in southeastern Ontario and bordering Lake Ontario, I think the data for Kingston would be most similar to that of cities in upstate New York, such as Rochester, Syracuse or Buffalo. Because Kingston is not as built up as these cities, though, I think the UHI effect would be a little bit less than it is in the cities mentioned. My prediction is as follows: - Up to 21 degrees C hotter in urban areas than in rural areas - On average, city summers are 2 degrees C hotter - 2 more days above 90 degrees F each year than rural areas I included two pictures - one of downtown Kingston and another taken on a trail outside of the city. Some of the reasons that would contribute to the UHI effect of the city are built environment, density, and other structures that lower the wind velocities. In rural areas, solar radiation and wind are much less restricted. ![urban][1] ![rural][2] **Which are the measures you would propose?** I would suggest breaking up city blocks with more green space to minimize the amount of space that solar radiation can accumulate. This would also have an added benefit of providing more recreation space for residents. **Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area?** I do not know of any policies in our area concerning UHI effect.
