2: In my area there is a noticeable but small UHI effect. Cheltenham, a town of 100 000 inhabitants, currently appears 1-3 degrees hotter than it's surrounding rural areas. The nearby city is the same temperature as Cheltenham and also 1-3 degrees hotter than it's surrounding rural areas. As illustrated in the pictures, the town centre has a high density of buildings whereas in the surrounding rural area, the buildings are spaced more sparsely and are surrounded by green areas, this will be a large factor in the UHI effect. 3: UHI is not a problem in Cheltenham, we are happy to have the extra couple of degrees and would probably take more if we could! However, If I did want combat the UHI island effect, the first thing I would do is to locally legislate against building on existing green areas as these help to cool down the overall space. If this is not possible, I would incentivise building on brownfield sites to deter the useage of green spaces. 4: There are policies to reduce UHI in Cheltenham. ![enter image description here][1] ![enter image description here][2] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14453641833316044.png [2]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1445364194196266.png
