I chose Austin Texas as my example. It's recorded that Austin is 15 degrees hotter than its rural areas, with an average of 0.9 degrees hotter city summers compared to summers in the rural areas and 22 more day 90° F each year than rural areas. 2 Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area? ![Center of the city][1] ![Interior (forest) in Guyana][2] Main UHI effects in my area are HUMAN THERMAL DISCOMFORT which occurs when there are UHI intensity peaks which causes heat related illness and fatalities due to thermal discomfort . During extreme heat waves in Georgetown, the UHI can prevent the city from cooling down, causing high temperatures at night which causes side effects such as heat strokes, heat cramps and respiratory and lung diseases. ENERGY USAGE : increases in energy consumption such as air conditioners and refrigerators which increases the emissions of heat trapping green house gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and other pollutants. This also means increase of cost in energy consumption for citizens. 3 . Which are the measures you would propose? I would propose the maintenance of existing green spaces in the city and the creation of new green spaces such as parks and gardens. Also planting of different species of trees in areas that have excessive use of concrete building materials so as to produce a cooling effect. Also i would recommend using environmentally friendly building materials such as wood, since Guyana produces many species of timber, for construction of buildings instead of constant usage of materials such as concrete and stone. 4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area? Currently in Georgetown , the Ministry of Agriculture has launched a tree planting exercise to lead us into being a greener environment and promote a green enconomy . The event which was held under the theme, “Plant a Tree for a Green Economy” is on the Ministry’s calendar of activities for Agriculture Month (October) 2015. It will focus on greening the economy with the aim of winning the battle against environmental degradation and economic decline through planting trees so as to promote the growing of trees rather than the constant felling of trees that has been destroying our forest. As trees grow, they contribute to reducing climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the air, storing carbon in the trees and soil, and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. ![Kids planting trees to create green area in city space][3] [1]: http://www.mercyvolunteers.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/st.-georges-cathedral.jpg [2]: https://theainguyana.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/pc100086.jpg [3]: http://guyanachronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Tree-Planting1.jpg
