The main effect that I could tell anything about would be the temperature difference between Frankfurt as the next major city, and Dreieich as my place of living. Going by the current said temperatures, there would be a difference of 8 degrees Celsius. But even when driving from my part of Dreieich to another or to the neighboring City of Langen (with a little higher population density and more houses standing closer to each other, as well as more industrial facilities) the difference is always around 3 to 4 degrees. ![Frankfurt (am Main) Skyline][1] ![Dreieich During the Wintertime][2] Both photos were taken with a few months difference so they are no base for an objective comparison. Nevertheless, they can stand for what can be observed in the wintertime. While snow is falling in Dreieich or other Hessian suburbs and also covering the ground for longer than a few hours, maybe days or weeks, in Frankfurt or other big cities there is only very wet and dirty slush, if at all, to be seen before it vanishes completely very soon. ## Which are the measures you would propose? ## I would suggest to establish more decentralised regenerative energy production, to improve the existing energy-intensive processes in a way that more closed loops avoid the induction of additional energy that would be necessary when keeping the outdated procedures and machinery, strengthen public transport systems and make individual car traffic widely obsolete. Besides, from what could be learned in the lectures so far, I would suggest to run simulations, and for every new building project to optimise the building structure according to the interaction with climate and weather. ## Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area? ## There surely is, as the Green Party or environmental organisations for example are doing a lot to make aware the impacts of urban environments on the surrounding natural environments. An increasingly growing part of the German society is agreeing to their views and making such topics part of a wider political debate, and the government tries to act accordingly, while other (often obstructive) interests are of importance for it as well. Unfortunately I could not find up-to-date data to examine concrete measures and their possible effects in terms of Greater Frankfurt in particular.
