3 __The measures I would propose if I could take part in the decision making process to reduce the effects of UHI • Adding trees ( evergreens and shadow trees ) and park throughout the city. • White roofs • Green roofs and urban gardens • Planning streets to allow better air flow • Find natural alternatives to conventional air conditioning (green walls, fountains) • Take advantage of natural waterways or building artificial waterway to help reduce the temperature • Trying to build factories outside of the urban area and make the core of the city a residential place (less noise, less heat) • Smarter and greener technologies (electric cars, hybrid buses, solar electricity, etc..) 4__ Five years ago, some citizens and myself initiated the Green Streets project. We met with the mayor to ask for funds to finance half the price of a tree (250 Dinars DZ) for every house and stores in 70% of the city. And the citizens would pay the other 250 DinarsDZ . The project was approved and 60% of the city planted trees. Although it was a great achievement, it was not enough. Due to lack of funding, lack of political will and citizen involvement the project stopped.
