Compulsory excersice week 4 Question 2 Main effects of the heat island effect in this city I think is the pollution of air. Usually in the mornings there is a layer of pollution that forms over the city. I suppose that the warm air from the exhaust of vehicles starts to rise until it encounters a layer of colder air that prevents it from rising any further. As a result the air stays right there over the city until about noon when the upper layer warms up and the pollution dilutes further into the atmosphere. ![ingrese la descripción de la imagen aquí][1] http://miblogota.com/2011/02/09/reflexion-sobre-el-dia-sin-carro/ ![ingrese la descripción de la imagen aquí][2] Surroundings Angel and Ramirez [1] conducted a study over the last 40 years which concluded that the heat island effect in bogota is of about 3° higher than the surroundings. [1]Ángel, L., Ramírez, A., & Domínguez, E. (2010). Isla de calor y cambios espacio-temporales de la temperatura en la ciudad de Bogotá. Rev. Acad. Colomb. Cienc, 34(131), 173-183. But this picture suggests that the effect is not strong at the moment in the city. ![ingrese la descripción de la imagen aquí][3] The temperatures that appear on the picture are of Bogotá and its surrounding areas of comparable altitude with the exception of the green circle which is at much higher altitude. The areas to the west of the city are at a lower altitude and the areas to the east are at a higher altitude. It is also worth mentioning that there are no seasons because the city is 4 degrees north of the equator so this picture represents a typical day. Question 3 The temperatures that the heat island effect produces in this city raise the temperature to a comfortable 18 to 20 degrees throughout the day, so in this case I would not propose any measures to reduce it. 19 degrees is very comfortable. If the effect were to increase I would propose building more parks and waterbodies that cross the city, paving with white cement instead of asphalt because it reflects more sunlight, building rooftop gardens, and providing cleaner fuels to reduce pollution of air. Question 4 The city does not consider heat island effect to be a main problem of the according to the webpage of the agency for environment of the city. In the entire report there is only mention of the heat island effect once in the bibliography of the document.
