Gwalior is one of the developing cities of India. And like all developing areas, one can observe series of multistory apartment townships coming up in this area, like THE SUNVALLEY, THE DB CITY, to list a few. According to recent data by Central Pollution Control Board, Gwalior is at the very top of India’s eleven most polluted cities. This spurt in particulate matter pollution have been caused due to factors such as high population density, increase in number of vehicles, less greenery and dilapidated roads. Since past decades, the overall temperature of Gwalior has risen by about 1-1.5° C. What are the measures you would propose?** I suppose the best way to curbe this UHI would be to increase vegetation cover. Mainy focusing on planting trees on nearby houses, and residential and commercial bulding and placing a particular emphasis on vegetation planting on the roofs of the building. Use of reflective surfaces. Cool roofs should be used in commercial and residential buildings, where significant energy consumption can be reduced for cooling. Use of water absorbing road and parking pavements to induce ground water recharge, developing road side vegetation, etc, could be some other ways. **4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area.?** None such policy which directly aims at curbing the UHI effect, but certain efforts are being done in this direction. Gwalior has been identified and undertaken as one of the cities in the development of solar/ green city program initiated by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, whos main goal would be to reduce the energy use by certain amounts and increase the vegetation / greenery across the city.
