- I compared the temperature differences between Houston (up to 13 °F difference), Boston (up to 15°F difference), Detroit (up to 22°F difference) 2. Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area? - Canyon effect in the city. More importantly, a symmetric (or even) canyon exist, where the buildings are almost the same height. This traps the wind from reaching the pedestrian level. - Lack of greens which further aggravate the UHI effect - When summer temperatures peak, there is anthropogenic heat generated from air conditioning and motorized vehicles 3. Which are the measures you would propose? - Increase vegetation along the roads; this helps curb noise, dust and temperature rise; provision of more green cover in the form of parks etc - Since Sharjah has direct sunlight on an average of 10 hours per day throughout the year, there can be better use of materials to reduce reflectivity - Promote the concept of “vertical gardens”’ even indoor gardens to reduce the burden of air cooling - Bring in a a sustainable rating system for buildings - Promote public transport 4. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area? - The Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi does research on sustainable energy sources and urban heat island effect. - I am not much aware of the considerations taken during policy making; however there has been a trend of increasing green cover in the city. ![City Skyline][2] ![City Skyline][3] [3]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14464600337051547.jpg
